The Holy Quran:
Chapter 5, Verse 3
O you who believe! Fulfill (your) obligations. Lawful to you (for food) are all the beasts of cattle except that which will be announced to you (herein).
What is Halal?
Halal applies to every aspect of life in Islam. It includes any product, materials, ingredients, services (such as banking and insurance) and even the acts a person does. Usually, Halal is used with regards to foods, meat products, cosmetics and food ingredients.
|
For a product to be Halal, it needs to meet certain requirements which are determined and laid out in the Qur'an and Hadith (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad Peace be Upon Him).
Here is a list of the requirements for Halal:
•
|
- Free from flesh (meat, fowl, fish or
shellfish), meat or bone stock, animal or carcass fats,
gelatine, aspic or any other ingredients resulting from
slaughter of a Haram (not permissible) animal.
|
• |
Free from Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)
|
| • |
Free from Alcohol |
| • |
Free from Irradiated raw materials. |
• |
No cross contamination during the production process.
If the production line is shared with non-Halal
products, thorough cleaning must be carried out before
Halal production commences. This extends to all
associated machinery, equipment, utensils, surfaces and
clothing, which must remain free from non-halal
ingredients before Halal products are touched, prepared,
produced or packaged. Strict procedures must be in place
to ensure packaging mix-ups and other errors do not
occur. |
